Danielson pet store fire puts animals at risk
Danielson, Conn. —
A smoky fire heavily damaged a pet store on Commerce Avenue on Tuesday, possibly claiming the lives of animals being offered for sale, fire officials said.
Danielson Fire Chief Gerald Marcheterre said the rear section of the building was engulfed in flames when the first truck from his department reached the scene shortly after the first alarm at 7:09 p.m. A thick column of dark gray smoke could be seen rising into the early evening sky as firefighters battled the blaze.
Firefighters and trucks from six other departments, as well as a crew from the K-B Ambulance Corps, responded to the scene. Trucks lined Commerce Avenue from Main Street to the fire scene, where firefighters worked to put out the flames that heavily damaged the rear quarter of the store, which for many years had housed a farm and pet supply business.
Marcheterre said a number of animals, including a ferret, an iguana and a chameleon, were removed alive from the store.
Marcheterre said the fire was brought under control in slightly more than an hour. The front three-quarters of the building received extensive smoke and water damage, he said.
